Transfer Station , formerly known as the dump.
The disposal of waste is always a problem in a small, relatively isolated community ; not however in Tagish. The Department of Community Services manages a transfer station where residents can deposit domestic garbage, waste construction materials, scrap metal ( e.g cars, refrigerators, etc.), brush, and compost. There is also provision for the storage of toxic products.
Much of this is then transferred to the large waste facility in Whitehorse, including the compost which then becomes available to gardeners and others. Scrap metal is compacted and on a regular basis, shipped south. The transfer station is situated on Reid Road and is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the summer (April 1 to October 31) from 1pm to 6pm and on Saturday's and Sunday from 10am until 6pm. Winter hours (November 1 to March 31) start and stop 1 hour earlier (12 - 5 PM Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 9 AM - 5 PM on Saturday and Sunday). There is no access outside the hours of opening.
